Remember the days when you were little and someone really influential and important in your life would sit down and read stories to you? Weren’t those the good ole’ days when you didn’t even have to read for yourself but it was actually done for you? What a wonderful world we lived in when we were kids but somehow, once we got older, we forgot all about those early stages in our life when we were engulfed in personal development.
Some might say that they were just books of entertainment but I challenge that. Let’s look at one particular book, The Little Engine That Could. The story was simple but had a powerful message; you can accomplish anything you want in life as long as you put your mind to it. That little blue engine motivated a nation with four simple words repeated over and over again, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”.
He understood that not only did you have to believe in yourself but you had to consistently and persistently remind yourself of what you believed in. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. Even if you were going over a mountain or tackling an obstacle that you never faced before all you have to do is keep the end result in mind. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.
What story are you telling yourself TODAY?
What happened to stories like The Little Engine That Could that filled our lives with so much hope and inspiration? I remember being young and full of belief that I could do anything. For example, I knew that when I grew up I would either be a business owner, a power ranger or a dinosaur. Those are some great career options right :)?
But for some odd reason we changed the stories we listened to and therefore changed our belief system—crushing our dreams. Now that we are older, we believe we have to live in “reality” and in “today” instead of “our dreams” and “a better tomorrow”.
Our stories are now full of war, famine, grief, recession, unemployment, death, lack, struggle and the list goes on and on because we’ve made this our so called “reality.” It’s thrown in our face every day telling us it’s what we should believe in.
I think we need a new story
I don’t like that story nor do I choose to accept that as the reality in my life. We learned at an early age from The Little Engine That Could that our thoughts dictate our direction in life but many of us stopped believing as we grew up.
Earl Nightingale said it best in The Strangest Secret, “You become what you think about”.
We need to focus on telling ourselves different stories. Stories focused on abundance, peace, love, financial freedom, time freedom, life and all the possibilities of positivity. These are the stories we need to tell ourselves. These are the stories we need to tell each other because whatever you focus on expands.
It’s time to change your story.
The reason why you still have breath in your body is because you still have work to do on this earth and your story is not over yet. It is time for you to live out your dream and become the person you were place on this earth to be.
Focus on your dreams and I promise they will become your reality. All you need to do is repeat the famous words of that little blue engine, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”.
